How do I play Poker?
There are three main things you should research before jumping into Poker: Hand Rankings, Poker Game Variations, and Poker Terminologies .

Why Should I play Poker?
Poker is one of the most social games there is. If that isn’t enough for you, add a pinch of being able to test strategy, wit and gall against other players; sprinkle the fact that no two hands are identical, thus the game is ever new and exciting; and let boil. Serves four.

Why is Poker so popular all of a sudden?
Poker has always been popular, ever since it’s introduction to the world in the early 1800’s. It’s become mainstream for a variety of reasons. These include, but are not limited to :
• The invention of televised poker and the card camera’s that enable the game to be enjoyed as a spectator sport.
• Joe Hachem’s $7.5 Million 2005 World Series of Poker victory that rekindled the Australian interest in the sport.
• The fact that tens of thousands of previously virgin players had a go and found out just how good a game Poker is.

Where should I play Poker?
That entirely depends on whether or not you want to bet real money. Freeroll Poker Tournaments, such as Pokerama are free to play, and offer you a chance to pit your skills against other players for fun. If you are wanting to bet real money, you have to go to a casino (unless you are in NSW where Poker has been legalized outside of the casino). But be forewarned, you will either have to pay the casino a fee for playing, or a percentage of the money bet.

Should I play online or in a casino?
Poker consists of three main talents: most importantly bluffing (and reading others); secondarily knowing your odds; and least important of all, luck. In most online poker games, you cannot see your opponent, therefore you cannot read them. Then also, is the fact that you could be playing against anyone, including professional players masquerading as amateurs.

How much should I bet?
Only ever what you can comfortably afford to lose.

What level of competition is out there?
Awareness of poker is at an all time high, and literally thousands of people Australia wide now play the game regularly. Thus there is competition around, but that is not to say that there aren’t fresh players learning to play every single day.

What is the most fun version of Poker?
That is really open to interpretation. The most popular is by far Texas Hold’em. Other popular variations include Omaha, Stud, and Draw. Texas Hold’em is the game widely seen on television worldwide, and is also considered one of the easiest to understand.

What should I know before I start?
You should have a good understanding of Poker hand rankings and what constitutes good and bad pre-flop hands. You should also have a grasp of basic Poker terminologies, and of course how to play the version of Poker you want to have a crack at.
